Desperation and disaster finally leave them no other option and they fall into AA to ask for help.

Another common example that we see over and over in self help groups is the pattern of controlling behavior. People tend to avoid the fact that they are powerless over others and seek out relationships where they can control someone either through money or manipulation, always feeling that they are never satisfied with anyone they meet. They struggle with anger issues and feelings of rage when they don’t get what they want and their marriages and relationships with their children suffer as a result. Finding themselves at the end of their rope, they may finally turn to a counselor or therapist for help but find that no therapist seems “good enough” for them either. Because of a problem that is simply too big to ignore, they may stay around the therapist’s office for several months and, if they are lucky enough to listen to an expert just a little, they may finally have a breakthrough where they can finally see their own self centered behavior up close. Therapists are trained to help a person see their own behavior in a way that is impossible for them to see on their own. It’s a big difference between a person who can say they are a “control freak” and a person who can actually employ the courage to experience the fear of letting go. This is what others can help us to do and why self help groups are now so successful.

As much as we all wish we could do it all on our own, nobody is all-powerful and we all can benefit from an outside perspective once in a while. As the famous saying goes, “You can’t unscrew your screwed up head with your screwed up head!” Having the humility to see that you need a little help might just bring you the courage to seek one out. Your spiritual growth will be increased tenfold when you follow through and make a self help group part of your ongoing spiritual progress.

Big Lottery Fund is awarded for research to support self help groups in the UK

The Big Lottery Fund has announced a grant of £248,866 to support a joint research project to be conducted by Self Help Nottingham and the Universities of Anglia Ruskin and Nottingham designed to improve the support available for self help groups in the UK. Self help groups are run for and by peers who are facing a similar social or health related condition. There is now considerable evidence that peer-led self help groups offer an effective means for improving health and social care outcomes for people. The three year project entitled ‘Developing effective support for community based self help groups’ has just started. It is designed to produce evidence based guidelines that would be widely available to health and social care practitioners so that they can provide the best support for local self help groups. The project will be managed by the Director of Self Help Nottingham, Sarah Collis, with research carried out under the supervision of Professor Carol Munn-Giddings at Anglia Ruskin University and Professor Mark Avis at the University of Nottingham. Speaking on behalf of the Faculty of Health & Social Care at Anglia Ruskin University, Professor Munn-Giddings said: ‘The team at Anglia Ruskin University is delighted and excited to have been awarded this grant which recognises the importance that self help groups make to people’s social well-being and the role that community practitioners have to play in supporting their development.’Melanie Boyce from Anglia Ruskin University and Sarah Chaudhary from The University of Nottingham will be researchers for the project.The project is a qualitative participatory action research study conducted in four stages developed with self help group members. Stage one will describe the characteristics of self help groups and identify key issues for their development and maintenance. Stage two will involve in-depth case studies with selected self help groups and professionals in order to identify the development needs of self help group members and the professionals who are in contact with them. Stage three will develop an evidence based good practice resource pack for professionals working with self help groups. Stage four will be devoted to dissemination and communication with health and social care practitioners and experts nationally. How to Read a Self Help Book Effectively

Step 1

First, you have to know that self help books are good in general. However, the way you approach self help books is key to getting the most out of the books, for positive results for you.
You are the only person that needs to benefit from these books, so keep that in mind.

Step 2

Second step is to look first at the title, what is this book trying to make me better at? Will this help me financially? Find love?  Find Peace? Then after you get a good idea of what it’s trying to do, browse through the table of contents, what sections in the book may be more appealing to you then others?

Step 3

Third go straight to the chapter that appeals to you the most, and briefly read through 1-2 paragraphs in that chapter. If after the 2nd chapter they have got you hooked (would like to read more) My advice is to keep reading, until you lost interest. When you lost interest go back to the table contents and find another appealing chapter. The point here is to get to the meat of what you are looking for. Don’t read an entire book that bores you or is of no value to your results later on. You must get right to whatever you need from the book, and then apply what they are teaching or instructing in the books immediately.
