Self help to leadership basically focuses on creating personal leadership skills such that in any endeavor, they take command, stand for ideals, guide others and make strong decisions. This challenging skill separates them from others, and the greatest leaders were not born leaders, they became over a phase of time by slowly toughening up to criticism, resolving opposition and grew in strength by learning to rise, by standing firmly even in most difficult situations. However, people who desire to be leaders or who are keen to nurture leadership qualities can strengthen their skills and encourage to promote their aims.

Self help to leadership is a ladder to accomplish power that is expected to be started in the early stages of life so that a person is capable to taking responsibility. It is a must that anything started should be completed and any work done should be the best. This thought prepares even young children to gain incredible satisfaction on getting things done right. Self help to leadership can be initiated with young people joining clubs and student councils, while adults can get enrolled with some community club or church or some other business networking group. Initially, occupying a low power position and later gaining experience to responsible positions is the right entry level for aspirant leaders.

Volunteering work such as providing assistance to people in need, fund raising, performing specific services, etc teaches being and handling the authority role of leadership. Volunteers normally have less pressure and it is the best to understand self help to leadership. Initiate and take up new challenges with confidence as holding a leadership position in a small team gives an opportunity to widen to new ability levels, organize and study problems and to take a responsible part. Being responsible is one of the focused self help to leadership that allows you to concentrate and complete.

Self help to leadership is a ladder to claim power, but this needs honing speaking skills, writing and presentation style as well. These are the valuable skills that offer a realistic evaluation of leadership style and maintaining calm, even if there is lot of turmoil going inside, is one of the unbeatable talents that need to be honed. Self help to leadership need not necessarily begin from a working place or associations; it can slowly start with your group of friends as well. Look for a right opportunity and kindle a special interest or even a common interest and keep making agendas, minutes, update regularly, make simple alterations, offer ideas and guidelines, and slowly this will become professional.

Staying active most of the times is a great quality and develop a good listening skill, besides reading extensively about leaders, business magnets, politicians and many more famous people will give you guidance and inspiration. Unknowingly, you will realize that all excellent leaders of yester years as well have faced typical problems of yours, but knowing their style of handling the situations will be of great help.

Meet people from different backgrounds as it boosts your confidence level and offers valuable experience. Observing and studying others and handling adverse reactions without any harsh expression on the face are certain qualities that is tough to be developed, but is essential as self help to leadership. Reading self help books for leadership is of immense use as it throws light on various leadership elements, and some of the notable books are handling criticism, negotiating, emotional intelligence, asking questions, inspiring others, and more.

Article by Gary M. Miller

If you are serious about spiritual growth and self help, then a group is practically indispensable in getting you where you need to go. It is a fundamental truth in psychology and self help that you simply cannot overcome your problems alone. You need people who have been where you are and who have gone through the struggles you likely will go through as well. Even if your problem is the inability to be alone, it is likely that you can get some help from other people who use to be afraid of this but who found a way to face their fear and are now completely comfortable with being alone.

A self help group is one of the best ways to make a serious change because the others in the group will keep you honest. We all know how to lie to ourselves and pretend as though we are making a change even when we are not. We run from place to place talking about how we want to change and reading every book in sight but we are experts at avoiding the true issue beneath the surface. Our biggest fears are buried deep inside and we look for any way to avoid them so that we won’t have to face ourselves. Self help groups force us top be honest because everyone there can see through our lies and it becomes much harder to continue the same old behavior that we have been doing up until now.

As an example, it will help to consider some specific problems that people struggle with and eventually find help in a self help group. One of the most common of these is alcoholism. For years, alcoholics rationalize their problem with drinking and go through scores of relationships wherein they will do and say anything in order to continue drinking. Divorce, loss of job, loss of house and loss of family are all typical patterns for alcoholics even if these losses take place over the course of decades. Eventually, the alcoholic looks back over their life and realizes they’ve been running from one simple truth. They can’t stop drinking. Hundreds of people had already seen the problem in the alcoholic but they couldn’t see it themselves. The last place on Earth they wanted to go was a self help group. Desperation and disaster finally leave them no other option and they fall into AA to ask for help.

Another common example that we see over and over in self help groups is the pattern of controlling behavior. People tend to avoid the fact that they are powerless over others and seek out relationships where they can control someone either through money or manipulation, always feeling that they are never satisfied with anyone they meet. They struggle with anger issues and feelings of rage when they don’t get what they want and their marriages and relationships with their children suffer as a result. Finding themselves at the end of their rope, they may finally turn to a counselor or therapist for help but find that no therapist seems “good enough” for them either. Because of a problem that is simply too big to ignore, they may stay around the therapist’s office for several months and, if they are lucky enough to listen to an expert just a little, they may finally have a breakthrough where they can finally see their own self centered behavior up close. Therapists are trained to help a person see their own behavior in a way that is impossible for them to see on their own. It’s a big difference between a person who can say they are a “control freak” and a person who can actually employ the courage to experience the fear of letting go. This is what others can help us to do and why self help groups are now so successful.

As much as we all wish we could do it all on our own, nobody is all-powerful and we all can benefit from an outside perspective once in a while. As the famous saying goes, “You can’t unscrew your screwed up head with your screwed up head!” Having the humility to see that you need a little help might just bring you the courage to seek one out. Your spiritual growth will be increased tenfold when you follow through and make a self help group part of your ongoing spiritual progress.

Article by NeonDrum

The Big Lottery Fund has announced a grant of £248,866 to support a joint research project to be conducted by Self Help Nottingham and the Universities of Anglia Ruskin and Nottingham designed to improve the support available for self help groups in the UK. Self help groups are run for and by peers who are facing a similar social or health related condition. There is now considerable evidence that peer-led self help groups offer an effective means for improving health and social care outcomes for people. The three year project entitled ‘Developing effective support for community based self help groups’ has just started. It is designed to produce evidence based guidelines that would be widely available to health and social care practitioners so that they can provide the best support for local self help groups. The project will be managed by the Director of Self Help Nottingham, Sarah Collis, with research carried out under the supervision of Professor Carol Munn-Giddings at Anglia Ruskin University and Professor Mark Avis at the University of Nottingham. Speaking on behalf of the Faculty of Health & Social Care at Anglia Ruskin University, Professor Munn-Giddings said: ‘The team at Anglia Ruskin University is delighted and excited to have been awarded this grant which recognises the importance that self help groups make to people’s social well-being and the role that community practitioners have to play in supporting their development.’Melanie Boyce from Anglia Ruskin University and Sarah Chaudhary from The University of Nottingham will be researchers for the project. The project is a qualitative participatory action research study conducted in four stages developed with self help group members. Stage one will describe the characteristics of self help groups and identify key issues for their development and maintenance. Stage two will involve in-depth case studies with selected self help groups and professionals in order to identify the development needs of self help group members and the professionals who are in contact with them. Stage three will develop an evidence based good practice resource pack for professionals working with self help groups. Stage four will be devoted to dissemination and communication with health and social care practitioners and experts nationally. The main output, the evidence based guidelines, will be available via Self Help Nottingham.Self help group members in the UK will benefit from the availability of appropriate guidance on building resilience in self help groups, community based practitioners in the voluntary and public sector will have access to resources to work with self help groups, and health and social care commissioners will have the research evidence to include appropriate support for self help in their plans.Vera Todorov, chair of Trustees of Self Help Nottingham, said: ‘Very many people benefit from involvement in self help groups, and yet the contribution that self help activity makes to social well-being is often not well understood by health and social care professionals. I welcome this opportunity to bring together self help members and community practitioners to promote good practice in support of self help.’EndsNotes to EditorsAnglia Ruskin UniversityAnglia Ruskin University is passionate about the advancement of knowledge and the education of students, and we pride ourselves on taking university education in imaginative new directions. Our key contribution is to the enhancement of social, cultural and economic well being. We have two main campuses, in Cambridge and Chelmsford, with over 28,000 students and 1,000 academic staff.Distributed on behalf of Madhouse PR by NeonDrum (http://www.neondrum.com)Nicky DenovanTel: +44 7747 017654nicky[at]neondrum[dot]com

Lower back pain is a problem for almost everyone at some point in their lives. Estimates indicate that it may affect about 90% of the population at one time or another.

This kind of pain can be a very complicated matter. The quadratus lumborum muscle is one of the overlooked muscular sources of lower back pain. Strains of this muscle group are often caused by combined bending and twisting movements as a person gets up from a chair or picks up an object from the floor.

Functional scoliosis and short leg deviations may strongly be attributed to a hyper-contracted quadratus lumborum. Also, degenerative disc disease may strongly be attributed to bilateral tightening of the quadratus lumborum.

Other physical causes of pain might also be due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or disc herniation.

It can also be caused by postural imbalance. A tight hamstring or tight gluteus muscles has many times been the cause of back pain as I have experienced it in many of my clients.

If the cause of the pain is musculoskeletal, then certain manipulative massage techniques incorporated with stretches are very beneficial.

In my private practice I have seen many people with back pains and almost always have I noticed very tight hamstrings and gluteus muscles accompanying the pain. By decreasing the hypertonicity of those muscles, my clients were able to live with a pain-free back again.

I have also experienced great success in releasing back pain with energy work based on the teachings of acupuncture or acupressure. It is less invasive, gentler in touch and starts healing the body by harmonizing it from the very inside out.

Self-Help

If you think that the cause of your back pain is of muscular nature, try to stretch the hamstring and butt muscles for 60 seconds each twice daily. You can actually test the smoothness of those muscles by standing straight with feet about one foot apart. Now bend forward. Are you hands touching the floor without you bending your knees? If they are not, chances are very high that your hamstring (upper back leg muscle) and butt muscles have been shortened and need to be lengthened through daily stretches.

Let’s face it, publishing with established houses or university presses is still the widely accepted gold standard. This elitism means that self-published authors will have to work harder to establish themselves as experts in the media’s eyes.

Positioning yourself as a media expert means that you must continuously build exposure plus credibility, and you must directly let the media know you’re available to speak with authority on certain topics. It’s an ongoing process and a challenge, but it’s not impossible to grab the attention of interviewers, journalists, and producers.

The mystique of the college degree

It certainly can help to have a college degree in your field. Even self-help dating books are written by authors with doctorates. But what if you’re just good at meeting and flirting with guys, and you’ve got the stories to prove it? What if you don’t have a degree? What if you’re just passionate about your subject and really good at what you do?

To illustrate how self-publishers can begin to establish themselves as legitimate experts regardless of educational background, I present to you the true tale of 2 clients. Both work in education – one on the “soft” prevention and motivation side and the other on the “hard” academics side. These award winning consultants are both widely recognized for their work with young people from diverse, underserved schools and communities.

The 2 consultants couldn’t be more different. One was an excellent student and went on to get his PhD. He has automatic credibility with the media and is a frequent guest on radio and tv talk shows.

The other is dyslexic and was the class clown throughout his grammar school and high school years. He does not have a higher degree – yet he is a college professor and a visiting lecturer on college campuses. His self-published books have been required reading in psychology, sociology, education, and child development courses. He’s a high level, self-taught, independent scholar. He too is a frequent guest on mostly radio talk shows.

Roger Isaacs, the author of Talking With God, has a degree in language and literature, but that didn’t stop him from independently studying ancient languages, going on archeological digs around the world, and lecturing at the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies. He too is a high level, self-taught, independent scholar, and his book, with its 500+ pages of thoroughly researched content, footnotes, and extensive bibliography, proves his credibility.

Lay the groundwork for credibility

Writing a book is a good first step in establishing credibility, but a book alone is not enough. You must develop your author brand in ways that are recognized and accepted by the media. Here are some ideas.

Book quality. Make sure your self-published book is the best it can be. Is the content well written? Has it been edited and proofed? Are layout and design (internal pages, back and front covers) pleasing to the eye? Does the back cover copy make a reader want to buy the book? Your book must be good enough to stand alongside books published by the big guys. Quality is a must!

Get credentialed. Degrees are wonderful, but what if you don’t have the time or inclination to go back to school? My consultant who lacked a higher degree is a certified violence and drug prevention specialist, and he’s leveraged the heck out of that certification. There are ways around the lack of a degree. You’ll just have to work a little harder. Teach a class. Giving workshops and teaching at The Learning Annex and continuing education programs at colleges will help you establish credibility with the media. If people are paying money to sit at your feet, you’re credible.

Lecture on college campuses. This is a great way to establish expertise (and sell books). Both of my consulting clients speak at colleges. They do general talks as well as guest lectures, which of course is more prestigious (and students have to purchase books). By the way, have you included university media in your media list?

Documentaries. If any of my writing stars know how to pitch to producers of documentaries, please let us know! Whenever I watch a documentary, I’m sold on the credibility of the expert being interviewed.

Educate the media

Self-published books often venture beyond mainstream thought, and that’s the opportunity and challenge of promoting yourself to the media. If your book presents a truly unique idea you may have cornered the market on a topic few know about. On the other hand, few know about it so you must educate and enlighten as well as promote. Think more infomercial than ad or press release to enhance believability.

Your website. Make sure your author website is rich in information about your book and beyond. Create an archive of articles and a links list to other relevant sites. Post pictures and video so that people can see you in action doing your thing. Blog about ongoing developments in your field that were not covered in your book.

Your press kit. In addition to the typical press release and bio, make sure to include information that will help an interviewer, journalist, or producer easily understand what your topic is all about. Include an article and a list of questions that they can ask you during an interview.

Email/fax blast to media. Send a brief statement about your book, a brief bio that focuses on why you’re an expert in the field, and a direct statement to the press: “Here are the topics I am qualified to discuss.” Include brief quotes from the book and most importantly, testimonials from reviewers and recognized experts in your field. As the old saying goes, you’re known – and respected – by the company you keep.

The 24/7 media cycle is a blessing in disguise for self-published authors. It’s a beast that must constantly be fed with news, information, and features. Lay the groundwork that establishes your credibility, and then pitch yourself with confidence.

Self-publishers, we’d like to know about your successes and challenges in establishing yourselves as media experts. Please drop a line and let us know how you’re doing. Let’s learn from one another!

Article by Roberto Sedycias

Through self-help books one teaches oneself to be economically, emotionally and intellectually mature and independent. The whole process has a lot of psychological as well as spiritual base.

Self help books inculcate in the reader the spirit of self-reliance. There are of course likeminded support groups to lean on. It is not a partnership of dependence but of co-operation. Examples can be given of self-help legal practice, homespun advices and many more. In course of time self-help books are leading guides in the field of education as well as business. Psychology plays an important part in the writings of these self-help books. These books have led to self-help movements.

According to prominent psychiatrists the self-help books are quite distinct from the professional counterparts. The latter cannot provide friendship, emotional prop up, first hand experimental knowledge, self-identity, roles in life with a meaning and above all a sense of being belonged. Self-help books links people with any kind of health condition. It is especially applicable to those who are mentally unstable. However everything does not work for everyone. The same applies to these self-help books. People going through similar travails form lobby groups and by sharing problems many knots are untied. Actually self-help books bring about link with like minded people – contact between peers.

The self-help books are based on an ancient concept of autosuggestion. It is repeating to one self the magic words of `I can! I can!` The books are getting worldwide acclaim from humble beginnings. Self-help legal services are also expanding. The Internet is now an invaluable tool for the popularizing of self-help books. On a gigantic scale free information is being provided leading to self-empowerment.

The self-help concept, now being codified in books, has a long history. It goes back to 2,500 BC when we first come across the advice poems of Hesiod. It is an adaptation of Eastern philosophy and thought. The Stoics of Greece offered similar advice of awakening the powers of the self. The ideas are expressed in ancient proverbs of different cultures of the world from time immemorial. The word self-help found a place in legal parlance when it came to be acknowledged that a person has the right to plead his own case in court of law.

Nothing talks about self-help more lucidly than the famous saying `Heaven helps those who help themselves`. Samuel Smiles in the late 19th century authored the first book on personal development. The title was Self Help. This principle of self-help or autosuggestion is used widely in the treatment of curing alcoholics and the like. It is the self that cures and the self that destroys. It is a question of awakening the self. These self-help books advise certain techniques to achieve this goal.

In this field of work Dale Carnegie is a famous name in the first half of the 20th century. In 1936 he published his all time best seller – How to Win Friends and Influence People. It reflected his own successful battle against repeated failures. So far 50 million copies have been sold and continues to sell captivating each new generation. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill also hit the market inspiring people about the power of thought.

Researches show that self-help books have captured the market in a big way covering a wide variety of topics form weight loss to friendship gain. One can teach oneself how to become even a politician and win laurels. There are critics who say that these are easy answers to difficult questions that cannot be really implemented.

Step 1

First, you have to know that self help books are good in general. However, the way you approach self help books is key to getting the most out of the books, for positive results for you.
You are the only person that needs to benefit from these books, so keep that in mind.

Step 2

Second step is to look first at the title, what is this book trying to make me better at? Will this help me financially? Find love? Find Peace? Then after you get a good idea of what it’s trying to do, browse through the table of contents, what sections in the book may be more appealing to you then others?

Step 3

Third go straight to the chapter that appeals to you the most, and briefly read through 1-2 paragraphs in that chapter. If after the 2nd chapter they have got you hooked (would like to read more) My advice is to keep reading, until you lost interest. When you lost interest go back to the table contents and find another appealing chapter. The point here is to get to the meat of what you are looking for. Don’t read an entire book that bores you or is of no value to your results later on. You must get right to whatever you need from the book, and then apply what they are teaching or instructing in the books immediately. This is how you get the most out of self-help books so that you get positive results

Great Quotes From Great People on Self Improvement

Self improvement is one of the most ignored journeys in our modern society. Start your journey like a child who is born into this world to learn. We can have intense desire for changing or improving who we are, but if we don’t begin the journey with one step, as Confucius once said and then break it down into smaller plans, the journey might begin to seem impossible.

Any time you sincerely want to make a change, the first thing you must do is to raise your standards. Write down all the things you would no longer accept in your life, all the things you would no longer tolerate, and all the things that you aspire to become.

Go ahead and take the actions and steps necessary to make your goal of self-improvement in some area of your life into a reality. A good example of this is how athletes will compare their current performance to their own previous performances with self-improvement being the number one goal.

The great philosopher Heraclitus says “the only permanent thing in this world is change”. Everything is in constant flux. But human nature resists this change because change is uncomfortable, stressful and painful. We hate change so much and yet it is change that has brought in so much progress for us.

Over the years my teacher has been teaching about a simple concept called ‘The Ant Philosophy’ to students. I think everybody should study ants. They have an amazing self improvement philosophy and here it is:

Ants never quit. When they’re headed somewhere and you try to stop them; they’ll look for another way. They’ll climb over, they’ll climb under, and they’ll climb around. They keep on looking for another way. Likewise never quit moving in the direction of your goal but do keep changing the ways to get where you want to go.

Take a look at these great quotes from great people on self improvement:

“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have mastered, you will never grow.”

Cindy Wagner

“I’m going to get through this; I’m going to be fine. The power to do it is all in my mind.”

Sean Gregory Derrick

“No one knows everything, but everyone can learn something.”

“The best contribution one can make to humanity is to improve oneself.”

Socrates

“Employ your time in improving yourself by other men’s writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for.”

These people are the pillars of our society and these quotes are stressing on self improvement for the betterment of society and humanity.

If we want to improve we need to learn from our mistakes, from our experience, from other people, from our failures and successes and not to forget from our leaders. Our success is the result of our ability to learn and grow in all situations.
